History

Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. has been in existence since April 29, 1980 when it was founded on the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University in New Jersey. It was officially added to the Rutgers University Greek community on March 11, 1981. Our sisterhood was born from the collective goal and idea of the following seven women:

- Maricel Rivera
- Sonia Rosa
- Catherine Miranda
- Mariela Freay
- Nancy Collazo
- Maria E. Tejera
- Evelyn Burgos

And with the assistance of Ramonita Santiago
(Honorary Founding Mother)

Our Founders are seven Latinas who had the desire to form an organization to promote leadership in the community and Sisterhood -- to create a place away from home in which members could feel the strong sense of family.

We are a sisterhood of ALL ethnicities and cultures. Our common calling is a respect for one another and the ideals of our Founding Mothers, rooted in the empowerment of all women and appreciation of our cultures and all its aspects.

We are devoted to our mission, to create a political, educational, cultural, and social awareness not only amongst ourselves, but our communities. CUS is a promise of love, pride, and respect for all sisters and in this belief we keep the CUS dream a reality.
